My old rounding hammer finally gave out on me last Tuesday.

The head just flew off while I was shaping a shoe for a big draft horse in Spokane. I had to finish the job with my backup cross pein, which felt wrong after twenty years with the same tool. What's a good modern replacement that still has some heft to it?

My uncle's old rounding hammer split a railroad spike back in '92, sent a chunk of steel right through his shop window.

My buddy in Montana swears by the 3.5 lb rounding hammer from Old World Anvils. It's got a nice long handle and the balance feels like the old ones.

Honestly, my friend's backup cross pein snapped clean in two on a cold morning. He ended up using a small sledge for a week until his new hammer came in.
