My mentor told me to always carry a spare hoof knife in my apron pocket
I thought it was overkill until I dropped my main one down a drain at a barn in Lexington last month. Having that backup saved me a ton of time and kept the appointment on track. Do you all have a specific backup tool you never leave the truck without?

A spare rasp is my go-to. I was halfway through a tricky trim on a draft horse when mine snapped at the handle. Having that second one in my box meant I could just grab it and keep going without a trip back to the shop. It’s saved me more than once when a tool just gives out at the wrong time.

That's smart, @beth719. I get why a spare rasp is key for you, since a broken tool mid-job would be a huge pain. Makes me wonder if you've ever had two break on the same day, or if the backup has always been enough.

Always keep a spare hoof knife for the same reason.
