Appreciation post: My old boss in Tulsa swore by a 3-pound rounding hammer over a 2-pound cross pein for setting shoes, and after switching last month, I finally get it.

The extra weight and the round face just seat the nail heads cleaner and faster, especially on those big draft feet, so what's your go-to hammer for a standard keg shoe?

A three pound hammer for shoeing sounds like a workout just thinking about it.

Yeah, that extra pound makes a real difference. I used to think my old 2-pounder was fine until I had to set a bunch of shoes on a big quarter horse with hard feet. Switched to a 3 lb rounding hammer and it just drives the nail with less effort, like @burns.brooke said, it is a workout at first. Your arm gets used to it quick though, and the round face lets you hit at a slight angle without marking up the shoe. Now it's the only thing I grab for a standard keg shoe.

My grandpa always said a good hammer is half the job. He used a 3-pounder for forty years on his ranch in Colorado, said it saved his shoulder on a long day. I get what @burns.brooke means about it sounding heavy, but that weight does the work for you once you get the swing down. It just sinks those nails in one clean hit, no second tap needed, especially on a wide shoe.
