A vet in Flagstaff told me to feel for the digital pulse before I even pick up a hoof.
He said it's the best early warning for inflammation, and now I do it on every single horse. Anyone else have a simple check they always do first?

My old boss in Texas said that pulse check is a waste of time for a sound horse. You need to see the whole horse move first, because a weird gait changes everything. Starting with a tiny detail can make you miss the big picture.

That digital pulse tip is solid. It reminds me of an old farrier who would just watch a horse walk off from twenty feet away before he even said hello. He claimed he could spot more problems in those first few steps than in an hour of close work. I guess everyone has their own weird first check.
