That stone veneer siding job I did last fall changed the whole look of my house

I had this plain beige siding on my split level in Denver for 8 years. Last October I finally ripped it off and put up stacked stone veneer on the front third of the house. Whole thing cost me about $4,200 in materials and took 6 weekends. The difference is nuts - looks like a totally different house now. Anyone else do a partial siding swap and get surprised by how much it changed the vibe?

My buddy Mike did something similar on his ranch house up in Fort Collins. He only did the front porch pillar and the whole entryway, cost him around $1,800 in materials and three weekends. His wife said it made the house feel way more mountain lodge style and now all the neighbors keep asking who did the work.

My buddy Jared tried something similar on his little cabin up near Estes Park last fall. He went with this hand-split cedar on just the front gable and the porch supports, said the lumber yard guy talked him into spending a bit extra for the rough-cut stuff. Took him about four weekends with his brother in law helping part of the time, maybe two grand in materials total. His place went from looking like a basic shed to one of those magazine photos his wife keeps showing me, and now two other guys on his street are planning to do the same thing come spring.

That $4,200 number sticks out to me. You spent that much just on the front third of a split level. I've seen stone veneer jobs in Denver where people regretted it after one hailstorm. Chipped pieces everywhere. And 6 weekends of labor, plus your time. You really think the neighbors care that much? My buddy in Aurora did the same thing, cost him $3,800, and now he's got mortar cracking in the freeze-thaw cycle after two winters. Half the time these "wow" reactions fade by spring.
