Found out my town's historic district bans certain roof colors, learned it from a zoning pamphlet at city hall.
It says you can only use slate grey, black, or dark green on any visible roof plane. Does that rule help preserve character or just limit creative choices?

My buddy got fined for a red roof his neighbors couldn't even see.

Check the exact wording on "visible roof plane." Sometimes you can use a brighter color on a back slope if it's not seen from the street. Argue it limits choices, but they'll point to the 1920s photos showing only those three colors.

Painted my chimney a light gray that matched the approved slate colors and no one cared. @max388, you might try a similar workaround if your HOA is like mine.
