My uncle's 20 year old deck stain advice finally made sense

My uncle Bill told me back in 2018 to never use the cheap big box store stuff on cedar decking. He said spend the extra $40 on a good oil based stain. I thought he was just being old school and stubborn. Last summer I finally redid the deck on my house in Portland using the same brand he swore by. That stain has held up through two rainy winters without peeling, while my neighbor's cheap stuff from last spring is already flaking off. Anyone else have a relative who turned out to be right about something?.

Had a buddy who ignored his dad's advice about cleaning his bike chain with kerosene instead of that spray degreaser. Dad swore the cheap stuff just pushed the dirt deeper into the links. Buddy's chain started grinding six months in. Finally tried the kerosene method on a new chain and that thing ran smooth for two years straight. His dad just gave him that look over Christmas dinner.

My buddy swore by his grandma's vinegar cleaning trick and now his grout looks new.
