Drove past a house in Portland that changed my mind about fiber cement siding
I always thought HardiePlank was overhyped and expensive, but last week I saw a 15 year old house with it near Mount Tabor that still looked brand new. No peeling, no rot around the windows, just solid paint. Has anyone else seen fiber cement hold up way better than they expected in a rainy climate?

Have you actually lived with it though? I mean, I've seen a few houses around here with HardiePlank and they looked fine from the street, but up close the paint was chipping along the edges where they cut it. Also, the installation has to be absolutely perfect for it to hold up, and finding a contractor who can do that is harder than you think. I've talked to a couple of homeowners who ended up with moisture trapped behind it because the flashing wasn't done right, and that's a nightmare to fix. Idk, maybe it's just me but I wouldn't pay that much for something that depends so heavily on the installer.
