PSA: Just found a stress fracture in my homemade governor assembly
I was putting together a governor for a display piece using spare parts. After a load test, I spotted a hairline fracture near the pivot pin that could have given way. Always run a dye penetrant check on any used or homemade components before they see real weight. What's your go-to test for critical moving parts?

Magnetic tests really are key for anything spinning fast, like @angela204's friend's driveshaft.

Oh yeah, dye penetrant is a lifesaver. I had a homemade linkage snap on me last year because I skipped the check. It was for a small engine flywheel and could have been real bad. Now I always do a magnetic particle test on anything that spins fast. It shows cracks you can't even see with a flashlight. Why risk it when a simple test can save your project, right?

Man, my friend had a homemade driveshaft let go and it was not pretty. That's what got me to start using magnetic tests too.
