Found a blown cap on a 10 year old power supply last week that nearly took out a whole home theater setup
It was a $40 repair job but if I hadn't caught that bulging capacitor near the heat sink it could have fried the receiver too, has anyone else seen older gear fail like this after a power surge?

Huh, that's a good catch. It's wild how many older electronics are just ticking time bombs waiting for a surge to finish them off. Seems like anything past the 8 year mark with original caps is playing roulette.

Caught a 10 year old PSU bulging myself last year, it was in an old HTPC that I'd been too lazy to replace. @morgan.cameron is dead on about the 8 year mark. Honestly, those cheap caps are like little grenades just waiting for a surge to pop. Ngl, I should probably start checking my receiver's board more often before it joins the ticking time bomb club.
