An apprentice in Cincinnati told me 'the code is the minimum, not the goal' and I can't stop thinking about it.

Oh man, that apprentice is wise beyond their years. I've seen so many projects where they treat the bare minimum code like it's a finished masterpiece. It's like building a house that just meets the building code, but the doors are all sticky and the lights flicker.

My old apartment had a bathroom door that would stick shut if the humidity got too high. You'd have to shoulder-check it like you were breaking down a crime scene door just to get to the shower. The landlord said it passed inspection, so it wasn't his problem. Honestly, that's the same energy as code that just barely runs but falls apart the second you try to do anything real with it.

Yeah, that's so true lol. I've had to fix so much stuff that just barely passed the code check but was a nightmare to actually use. It's like they forgot people have to live with the thing after it's built.
