My 90s basement bathroom tile got a radical update with just paint and sealer
I tiled my basement shower back in 1998 with those tiny white square tiles that always looked dirty. Over the last 2 years the grout turned yellow no matter how much I scrubbed it. Finally decided to try a two-part epoxy paint made for tile and a matte sealer over the whole thing. Took about 6 hours and cost me $80 in supplies and it looks like a brand new bathroom now. Has anyone else tried painting old tile in their Edmonton home and had it hold up through the winter?

...and you're really gonna trust paint in a shower that gets steamed up every morning? Look, I've seen this exact thing play out at buddy's house in Leduc. He did the whole epoxy paint thing on his tub surround, looked great for maybe three months. Then the moisture from winter showers started making the paint bubble up around the edges where the tile meets the tub. Now it's peeling in sheets and looks worse than the original yellow grout.
I'm not saying it can't work for some people, but $80 and 6 hours of your time to maybe get a year or two out of it? That's a gamble. You're basically putting a Band-Aid on a problem that's just gonna show up again when the humidity hits hard. And Edmonton winters? That dry air inside plus steam from hot showers is a brutal combo for any paint job.
If you really wanna save money, just rip out the old tile and slap up some waterproof panels. Costs more upfront but you won't be repainting every couple winters. But hey, if you're cool with touching it up every year, more power to you. Just don't go telling people it's a permanent fix.
