Finally quit using rubber baseboard and went with MDF for my whole basement. Never going back.

Used to think rubber baseboard was the smart choice for basements. Flood proof, right? But after 3 years in my Edmonton house the stuff looked terrible. Yellowed in spots. Dust stuck to it like crazy. The corner pieces always popped off. Then I did my buddy's Reno last fall. He used MDF primed baseboard. Painted it myself with good semi gloss. Looks clean. No gaps. And honestly for the price difference it's like $60 more for a whole basement. Anyone else have rubber baseboard regret?

I spent an entire weekend picking rubber dust out of my carpet after my old stuff started crumbling (not my finest moment). MDF is definitely the way to go, even if it means I have to pretend I'm handy when the wife catches me cutting it with a hand saw.

My buddy Mark tried to save money on a shelf liner and went with that cheap foam rubber stuff. Three months later his cat decided it was a scratching post and shredded it all over his living room. He said it looked like a unicorn had exploded in there, little pink and blue flecks everywhere. His wife made him vacuum the whole house twice and he still finds bits of it in the weirdest places. He finally ripped it all out and just painted some MDF boards instead.
