That light switch cutout that took me 90 minutes to fix
I had a simple job last Tuesday, just patching a small hole near a light switch. Figured 20 minutes tops. But the existing cutout was off by almost half an inch from where the new box sat. I ended up cutting the patch three separate times because I kept measuring wrong around the switch ears. 90 minutes for something I could do in my sleep. Has anyone else had a tiny detail on a patch just wreck a whole morning?

Man, I feel this. I used to think patch jobs were the easy ones, the quick wins between bigger projects. But that "cutout was off by almost half an inch" line got me. I had a similar thing last year with a switch box that was like a quarter inch too high. I ended up cutting four different pieces of drywall because I kept trying to be clever and notch around the ears instead of just doing a bigger rectangle. Changed my whole mind about what counts as a "tiny detail." Now I double check every single measurement around boxes like three times, even if it's just a basic patch. It's humbling every time.

Three years ago I would've called this overthinking. Called it analysis paralysis. But after redoing a ceiling patch in my bathroom four times because the vent cutout was 3/8 inch off, I get it now. That half inch difference between a clean finish and a frustrating redo is where real experience lives.

Ngl that hit home hard. I spent a whole Saturday once trying to patch a tiny hole near a light switch in my laundry room. The switch box was set back weird so I kept missing the screw holes on the faceplate after I mudded everything. I swear I cut that patch like five times before I just gave up and used a bigger piece of drywall to cover the whole mess. Ended up having to redo the tape job three days later cause I got frustrated and slapped the mud on too thick. Honestly those little jobs are the ones that teach you the most patience.
