Talked to an old timer at the supply house about mixing mud
He saw me buying a box of the pre-mixed stuff and just shook his head. Said 'Son, you're paying for water and a bucket. A bag of powder and five minutes with a drill is half the cost.' I always thought it was faster to use the ready stuff, but I tried his way on a garage job last week. Used a 50lb bag of Durabond 90 and mixed it in a clean trash can. Not only was it cheaper, but I could get the consistency perfect for taping versus topping. Anyone else make the switch back to powder and notice a real difference in how it handles?

Oh man, that old timer was spot on. I switched back to powder a few years ago and the control is just so much better. You can mix a stiff batch for filling big gaps and a creamy one for finish coats, all from the same bag. It feels like real work instead of just opening a bucket.

My last garage job used three bags of Sheetrock 45, and I mixed each one a little different. The first batch was like peanut butter for bedding tape, the last one was almost runny for a smooth skim coat. I mean, you just can't get that from a pre-mixed bucket. Miller.susan is right, it turns it into actual craft work. Plus a bag lasts forever if you keep it dry.
