Pointing out pre-existing flaws consumes most of my consultations.

Homeowners rarely trust that the damage wasn't our fault.

Untouched paint layers? That's crazy.

It's a trust issue at its core, right? You have to walk them through the timeline of how that specific damage happens, almost like telling a story. Showing them close-up photos of the rot or crack next to something clearly old, like untouched paint layers, can turn a light on for them. Taking that extra minute to explain the 'why' now saves a huge argument about the bill later.

My buddy had a client convinced his crew cracked a foundation wall. He pulled up a picture showing tree roots, older than the house, growing right into the crack. It was the only thing that worked. Green.mason is right about untouched paint layers being a solid clue too. People just don't know how long these problems take to show up. You have to become a part-time detective just to get paid.
