Overheard a homeowner in Portland say they'd just use spackle for a 3-inch hole

I was grabbing coffee before a job and the guy at the next table was telling his friend he could fix a big hole in his wall with just a tub of spackle. Tbh, it made me think about how many people have no idea what we actually do. What's the wildest wrong fix you've seen someone try to do themselves?

Oh man, I saw a blog post where someone filled a cracked foundation with expanding foam.

lol reminds me of the time I tried to fix a leaky pipe with flex seal and my landlord was like "what did you do." turns out that stuff is great for infomercials but not so much when you actually need it to hold water pressure. lesson learned the hard way.

My neighbor in Phoenix tried to seal a roof leak with duct tape and a trash bag. I mean, it lasted maybe one monsoon season. People just don't get how water works.
