My third straight ceiling job this month finally felt smooth.

Last Thursday I overheard a pro saying he never uses mesh tape on butt joints, just paper. I tried it on the last 12 foot seam and the finish sanded almost flat. Has anyone else found that trick cuts down on mudding time?

Paper tape on butt joints is the way to go, flat seams every time with way less passes. Took me a few bad mesh jobs to finally switch over.

Took me three miserable mesh jobs and a lot of swearing to learn that lesson myself. My walls look way better now, but my ego still hasn't recovered.

That "ego still hasn't recovered" line hits close to home @tyler_baker. Had a buddy who tried mesh on his first ceiling job and ended up with a seam that looked like a topographical map of the Rockies (seriously, it had peaks and valleys). He spent the whole weekend sanding it flat, then just painted over the mess and swore off mesh forever. Paper tape on butt joints is all he uses now too, says it saved his marriage or something like that.
