I finally got why drywall disposal needs attention.
Loose scraps can leak into groundwater. Use sealed bags every time.

The gypsum in drywall is the real problem, it can mess with the sulfur content in water. Stellarivera has a point that it should be common knowledge, but honestly I think a lot of folks just hear "groundwater" and assume it's only about chemicals. With drywall, it's more about the mineral breaking down. That's why the sealed bag tip is so good, it keeps everything contained. The rules at the dump are usually about keeping the truck area clean too.

Why isn't this common knowledge already?

Good question. Who exactly should be spreading this knowledge? Is it on the contractors, the waste management companies, or the government? Most folks don't think about drywall until they're renovating or dumping it. The details get lost in the fine print of disposal guidelines. Maybe it's not a priority until it causes a real issue.
