Finally saw the light on my own mudding after 2 years

Helped my buddy finish his basement last weekend and looking at the before and after pics from when I first started vs now - night and day. The first tape job in my own garage was a lumpy mess in 2022, but his bedroom at 1234 Oak Street had flat seams with almost no sanding needed. What changed? I stopped rushing the pre-fill and started using a 12-inch knife instead of the cheap 6-inch. Anyone else notice a big shift in quality after a certain point?

@dixon.anthony has a point, a 10-inch can be easier to control if you're still dialing in your technique. The real game changer for me was getting the mud thin enough on the first coat so it doesn't fight you, no matter what knife size you use. Pre-filling the butts and bevels first really cuts down the lumps too, that alone saved me hours of sanding.

Started using a 12-inch knife instead of the cheap 6-inch" - man I gotta disagree a bit. A bigger knife helps but if your mud consistency or angle is off you'll just make bigger messes faster. I switched to a 10 inch and actually got better results than the 12 because I had more control on the edges.
