We used to run the cutterhead at full tilt on every job, but after a pump clog in the Ohio River last spring, I slow it down for silty bottoms.

The old crew said power through everything, but now I think a steady feed saves wear and parts. Anyone have a rule of thumb for cutter speed versus material type?

Buddy of mine learned that lesson the hard way when his cutter tried to eat a submerged log.

Ngl, that log story reminds me of the time a buddy thought his auger could handle a tangle of old fishing net. Took him three days to sort out the mess.
