Saw a slick trick with a dredge pump in Mobile Bay last week
The crew on the 'Delta Queen' had rigged a simple screen from a piece of expanded metal over the suction intake. It was catching a ton of debris before it could jam the impeller. Anyone else use something like this for shallow water work with lots of trash?

Funny you mention that, my cousin tried something similar on his little skiff up in the Chesapeake. He used a piece of old window screen stapled to a PVC frame and clamped it over the intake. Worked great for about two trips until a bunch of grass and mud sucked it right off and jammed the pump anyway. He spent the next hour cussing and digging it out with a stick. I guess sometimes the simple fixes just get you into new kinds of trouble.

Always thought that was overkill until I saw it work.

Funny how one good result can make people ignore all the times it fails. Most of the time that extra step is just busywork for no real gain. Seems like we're all just chasing that one time it worked and calling it a win. Bet if you tracked it, the success rate wouldn't be worth the effort.
