Old timer on the Mississippi showed me something I still use

Back in 2009 I was working a cutterhead job near Baton Rouge. Old guy named Ray was running the tender boat. He told me to stop fighting the current and let the swing cables do the work. Said "the river knows where it wants to go, your job is just to follow." Changed how I approach every single cut since then. Any other older operators pass down a tip that stuck with you?

Actually swing cables pull you, they don't push.

Right? I got on one of those at the county fair and it yanked me so hard I almost lost my shoe. Cable definitely got me, not the other way around.
