Remembering my neighbor's advice about paint brushes
He handed me a $15 Purdy brush in his garage last fall and said, 'A good brush cleans up, a cheap one just gets thrown away.' Anyone have a favorite brush brand that's lasted you years?

That neighbor was SO right. I've had the same Purdy brush for like eight years now, and it still works like new after a good clean. It's crazy how a cheap one just falls apart after one use. You really DO get what you pay for with tools. That advice is solid gold for anyone starting out.

Wait, you just use soap and water? Okay so first, never let paint dry in it, like ever. If I'm using latex, I rinse it super good with warm water until it runs clear. Then I work a little dish soap right into the bristles, rinse again, and spin it dry by flicking my wrist. For oil paint, I use the right brush cleaner from the hardware store, not just thinner. The big thing is storing it in the paper wrapper it came in to keep the shape.

Exactly! That's the kind of wisdom you can't buy. But it makes me wonder, how do you actually clean your brush to get eight years out of it? I've seen people ruin good brushes with the wrong cleaner or by leaving paint to dry in the bristles. Is it just soap and water, or do you have a specific method that keeps it perfect?
