My old process for digital painting involved 17 separate layers for a single eye, but after a workshop in Portland, I just use one messy layer and blend it all by hand.

Has anyone else ditched their super-structured workflow for something more chaotic but fun?

That timer trick is smart. My friend who does watercolors had the same noodling problem. She started leaving her paintings on the subway so she couldn't go back and ruin them.

Wait, leaving paintings on the SUBWAY? That's a level of commitment I could never reach, I'd be too worried someone would just trash it. The timer trick makes way more sense for my brain. Honestly, going from 17 layers to one sounds terrifying but also kind of freeing.

How do you stop yourself from over-blending when you work on just one layer? I had to force myself to use a bigger brush and set a timer, because I'd just keep noodling the same spot forever.
