Learned my layers were stacked wrong after a whole year of digital painting

I've been painting in Procreate for about a year and a half now, and I kept getting this weird blurry look on my characters every time I added shading. Last week I watched a quick tutorial where the artist said you should keep your line art on top and your flat colors underneath. I had it backwards - my flats were on top and line art below, so every time I merged them the edges got messed up. Fixed it on a new piece in about 15 minutes and the difference was night and day. Has anyone else had a simple setup mistake that took way too long to catch?
