Just had a chat with my cousin that flipped how I see my own art

He's not an artist, just a regular guy who works in an office. I showed him a piece I was stuck on, a digital portrait I'd been reworking for a week. He looked at it for a minute and said, 'It looks like you're trying to paint a photo instead of a person.' That hit me hard. I realized I'd been so focused on getting every pixel perfect that I lost the feeling. I spent the last two days redoing it with looser brushes and more expressive colors. Has anyone else had a simple comment totally change your approach to a piece?

Yeah that "paint a photo" line is so real. My friend had a similar thing where her mom said her landscapes looked "too clean" and it totally freed her up. She started leaving in more sketchy lines and it just felt more alive, even if @patricia_wright has a point about needing some precision sometimes.

Reminds me of my friend's pottery teacher.

Sometimes you need that technical perfection to really capture a person.
