I used to hate showing my work until a gallery night in Portland

At a small digital art show last fall, I had to stand next to my piece for an hour. A guy asked me why I used such a bright blue for the background, and explaining it made me realize my own choices better. Now I try to post one unfinished piece a week just to talk about the process. Do you find that showing work while it's still rough helps you see it clearer?

How can you see your own work until someone else points out the weird blue blob?

Man, I had this exact thing happen with a painting I did last year. I stared at it for three days straight and thought the sky looked totally normal until my buddy Jake walked by and asked why I painted a giant blue potato. After that I started taking photos of my work with my phone and flipping it backwards to see it fresh, or just leaving it in the room and ignoring it for a few hours. That distance really helps me spot the weird stuff on my own now. Have you ever tried stepping away for a day and coming back with fresh eyes?

Maybe it's like hearing your own voice on a recording.
