I finally realized my color theory was way off after 3 years of digital painting

I've been doing digital art for about 4 years now, mostly character portraits and fantasy scenes. A few weeks ago I was working on a sunset landscape in Procreate and something just felt off about the sky. My friend Sarah who does traditional oil painting looked at it and said 'your warm shadows are actually cool tones, that's why it looks flat.' She showed me how I was picking colors from the color wheel without understanding temperature. I had this huge facepalm moment because I've watched dozens of tutorials but never actually practiced seeing warm vs cool correctly. Now I'm going back through my old files and it's so obvious that my oranges and purples were all wrong for years. Has anyone else had a basic art concept suddenly click way later than it should have?

Man, that seems like a lot of drama over some orange and purple.

Wait, didn't those colors get picked specifically because they're impossible to fake on old printers?
