Unpopular opinion: The best advice I ever got was from a trucker at a diner in Flagstaff.

He told me, 'Kid, you can't fix a problem you don't understand. Listen to the engine, it's talking to you.' I was just a helper then, but that stuck with me more than any manual. Anyone else have a simple piece of advice that changed how you work?

That Flagstaff story is awesome, it's all about learning the deeper issue. I get what @chen.hugo is saying about checking the easy stuff, but sometimes you gotta listen for the weird noise first, you know?

Yeah I used to skip straight to fixing stuff but this totally changed my approach.

My buddy's boss just told him to always check the stupid stuff first, saved him hours last week.
