Unpopular opinion: I thought those magnetic oil drain plugs were a total gimmick.
A guy at the shop in Billings swore by them for catching metal shavings in our fleet trucks. I put one on a high-mileage Duramax as a test, and after 5,000 miles, the thing was covered in fine particles the regular plug would've missed. It actually showed me a potential bearing issue starting before it got loud. Anyone else run these and notice a real difference, or did I just get lucky?

Those magnetic plugs are cheap insurance. They can definitely show you the early signs of wear, like you found. Worth it for any high-mileage rig.

Saw a similar thing on an old tractor engine. That little bit of fuzz on the magnet can tell you a whole story.
