That $2,500 injector puller set I bought still sits in the box

Everyone told me I needed the fancy OTC master kit for 6.7 Cummins injectors, but after 8 years in the field I've never needed more than a slide hammer and some patience. Has anyone else found that specialty tool sets are just overpriced shelf warmers?

Man oh man, you hit the nail on the head! I swear half the battle with these jobs is just knowing how to work with what you got instead of throwing money at the biggest kit on the shelf. That slide hammer and a little finesse has probably saved you thousands over the years compared to what that OTC set would have cost. It's like when everyone buys the $800 snap-on ratchet but a regular craftsman one does the same thing if you don't break it every week. Those big tool companies are geniuses at selling us the idea that we NEED something when most of the time a cheater bar and some curse words get it done.

Close but I gotta call one thing out. The Craftsman vs Snap-on ratchet thing is a little off. A regular Craftsman ratchet doesn't have the same guts as a Snap-on one. The Snap-on ratchet mechanism is way smoother and can handle way more torque before it skips teeth or breaks. I've broken plenty of Craftsman ratchets on rusted bolts but my old Snap-on one just keeps going. The price difference is ridiculous though, I'll give you that. A good used Snap-on off ebay or a pawn shop is the smart move. You get the quality without paying the truck price.
