Old timer at the shop told me never to use penetrating oil on exhaust bolts
He said it just bakes into carbon and makes things worse, so I tried it anyway on a rusty F-250 manifold last Tuesday and spent 4 hours extracting snapped studs. Has anyone else had better luck with just heat and a impact gun?

Yeah, that's a rough lesson to learn the hard way.

honestly i think people overthink this whole penetrating oil thing. yeah it might not work miracles on every single bolt but half the time it's operator error not the oil. i've soaked stuff overnight and had them come right off. other times heat is the way to go. i just don't get why everyone acts like it's some huge deal. just try what you got and move on.
