Driving through the Southwest, dust buildup on diesel engines was intense.
Air filters got dirty real quick. It's a big factor for long hauls in dry areas.

My buddy Jake was hauling freight through Nevada last summer. The dust out there coated his diesel engine so thick his truck started choking near Reno. He had to get towed because his air filter was totally blocked and he didn't have a backup. After that mess, he actually took advice like @rowan_kim55 mentioned and now checks his filter every other time he gets fuel. He even bought one of those heavier duty filter elements and keeps a spare in the cab. It really shows how you gotta stay on top of it in the desert or you're stuck on the side of the road.

I started checking my air filter every other fuel stop on desert runs. Swapped to a heavier duty filter element too. Keep a can of compressed air in the truck to blow off the intake sensor between stops.
