Overheard a UX designer say 'just add an alt tag' like it's that simple

Was at a coworking space in Denver last week and heard someone dismiss accessibility as 'just pop in some alt text'. That thinking is why so many sites are unusable for people with screen readers. Has anyone else had to push back against this oversimplification?

Ask them if they know the difference between a decorative image and a functional one, and how they'd handle a complex chart or infographic. Most people who say "just add alt text" have no clue that a simple alt tag can actually break navigation for someone using a screen reader if its not done right. It's not just typing a description, you gotta know when to leave it blank too.

Tell them to just add an alt tag and stop making it complicated.
