Finally understood contrast after sitting in a coffee shop for 2 hours
I was at a local Starbucks in Denver last week trying to read a menu board from 15 feet away. The letters were this light gray on a white background and I physically could not make out the prices. A guy next to me pointed out he had the same problem and he wasn't even old. That moment made me realize all my web designs probably looked like that to someone with any vision issues. Now I test everything on my phone outside in sunlight before I call it done. Has anyone else had that gut check moment where a real world thing made you change your whole approach?

Oh man, that coffee shop menu thing gets me every time. I had the exact same wake up call when I tried reading the numbers on a thermostat across a dim hallway last winter. Couldn't see a thing even though the text was right there. Now I run all my design tests on my phone with brightness turned way down and the glare from a window hitting it. That low contrast light gray on white thing is a trap even people with perfect eyesight fall into. I swear by testing with a buddy who wears glasses and asking them to squint at it from across the room.
