Rant: I spent 2 weeks polishing a UI kit and the client wanted the old one back

Last month I had a project for a local coffee shop chain. They asked me to clean up their order flow, so I spent 2 weeks rebuilding buttons, inputs, and spacing into a fresh component set. I was so proud of it. Then the owner looked at it for 5 minutes and said "this feels too clean, we want the janky one". I literally rolled back to an old version in Figma and reattached all the screens. Has anyone else had a client reject a better system just because it looked different? How do you handle that without burning out?

A friend who does UX work once told me that clients often pick the mess they know over the clean version they don't understand. Sometimes it's about fear of change, not whether your work is better. Sounds like you did the right thing by rolling back fast and saving the polish for the next project.
