Update: That $40 monitor arm I bought off Amazon turned out to be a total disaster. Snapped right at the gas spring after 3 months.

I finally got around to fixing my desk setup after my cheap monitor arm gave out. The thing was a no-name brand for like 40 bucks and I figured hey, it holds a screen how bad can it be. Well the gas spring just gave up one afternoon and my monitor took a nose dive onto my keyboard. Luckily the screen didn't crack but I had to buy a whole new arm from a reputable brand for 120 bucks. The difference is night and day, the build quality is sturdier and the tilt adjustment actually stays put. I guess you really do get what you pay for with desk hardware. Has anyone else had a cheap accessory wreck their setup like that?

Read an article saying cheap gas springs are basically a ticking time bomb because they use thinner metal or something. Glad your screen survived that fall at least.

Three years back I had a cheap USB hub melt on my desk and @willow_anderson85's right, those gas springs are junk waiting to fail.
