My desk was a mess until I tried a $12 trick from a friend in Austin.
I had cords everywhere and kept knocking things off my desk. My friend suggested using a cheap plastic cable tray and mounting it under the desktop with command strips. It cleared up the whole area in about 20 minutes. Do you think hiding cables is better, or is a visible, neat cable tie system more practical for quick changes?

That "cheap plastic cable tray" idea is solid. My buddy did something similar but his whole desk fell off the wall when the command strips let go.

Why would you hide cables where you can't see problems before they happen? A visible system with ties lets you spot a frayed cord or loose connection instantly. If you need to swap a keyboard or add a new device, you're not stuck peeling off tape and hoping your whole desk doesn't crash down. Keeping everything tucked away seems neat until you actually have to maintain or change your setup. Then it's a huge hassle compared to just unclipping a few ties.

Oh man, you are so right. I did the whole zip tie thing under my desk and it looked great for about a week. Then I had to swap out a monitor and I spent a good 20 minutes cutting ties and fishing cables around. I have a USB hub that went bad too and I had to basically pull everything out just to get to it. Totally not worth the "clean" look when you're on your hands and knees dealing with a mess. Give me visible cables any day if it means I can swap a mouse in under a minute.
