My desk mat was blocking half my monitor's brightness this whole time

I moved my setup to face the window last week and realized the light gray mat I bought 8 months ago was reflecting glare right onto the screen, washing out colors on the left side. Swapped it for a charcoal one from the craft store for $12 and the difference is huge. Has anyone else had a desk accessory mess with their display calibration?

Wait, is the mat really the thing doing that or is it just the angle you're looking at the screen from now that you face the window? I've had lighter surfaces reflect stuff too but usually it's more about the light hitting the mat and bouncing up, so changing the mat helps for sure. But if your screen is still washing out when you move your head around, that's probably the window itself and no mat will fix that. I grabbed a cheap gray one from a garage sale and it didn't do much, so maybe your mat was just extra shiny?
