My desk in Seattle faces a window and the afternoon glare is killing my eyes
Last month I moved my home office to a room with a west-facing window, and by 3 PM the sun is directly on my screen. I tried a basic pull-down shade, but it just makes the room feel like a cave. Has anyone found a good middle ground, like a specific type of blind or film, that cuts glare without making everything too dark?

Diffuses the light" - does it still give you a view?

Consider getting a sheer vertical blind. It diffuses the light enough to kill the glare but still lets you see outside. It's the only thing that worked for my south facing window.

Yeah totally! @the_blake is spot on with the sheer vertical blind idea. I've got a similar setup with a light-filtering cellular shade that I can pull down just halfway, it cuts the direct glare but keeps the room feeling open. Maybe try a dual shade system where you have a blackout on a separate track for when you need total darkness, but the day-to-day sheer is your main. Works wonders for my afternoon sun.
