I finally figured out why my desk photos looked so flat

I kept seeing these amazing desk setup pics on here with this deep, moody look while mine always looked washed out. Turns out I was using my ceiling light as my main light source instead of a dedicated lamp. Last week I moved a $15 clamp light to point at the wall behind my monitor instead of directly at my desk and the difference was crazy. The bounced light gave everything this soft warmth without harsh shadows on my keyboard or mouse pad. Has anyone else dealt with bad overhead lighting killing their setup photos?

My buddy Mark tried taking photos of his new mechanical keyboard for like an hour and couldn't figure out why it looked all flat and yellow. He finally realized his ceiling light had one of those cheap warm bulbs that made everything look dingy. Swapped it for a daylight bulb and said it was like magic.

Yeah daylight bulbs really do make a huge difference for photos.

Yeah what @robinl90 said about the cheap warm bulb reminds me of something I notice everywhere now. People just accept whatever light comes from their ceiling fixture without thinking about how it changes the whole vibe of whatever they're looking at. It's like the same reason grocery stores use those harsh fluorescent lights that make produce look weird but bakeries use warm lights to make bread look golden and fresh.

Did you try switching the bulb out for a daylight one yet?
