Hot take: That $200 monitor arm I installed last week nearly dropped my ultrawide because I tightened the gas spring too much while watching a YouTube guide from 2019

The guy in the video said to crank it until the arm stayed put, but by the time I was done with the third tilt adjustment the whole thing creaked like a haunted house stair and now I'm terrified to even rest my coffee mug on the desk, has anyone else had an arm that just rejected the torque settings you gave it?

Actually I have to push back a little here. That creaking sound is usually just the joints settling into place, not a sign of failure. The gas springs in those arms are built to handle way more torque than most people ever give them, so cranking it down a bit shouldn't make it drop anything. I think the real issue is people watch those guides and crank the tension way past where the monitor's weight actually balances out, so the arm fights itself and makes all sorts of noise but it's not actually going to break. The 2019 guide might be outdated for your specific arm model too, some of the newer ones have different adjustment ranges. If you back off the tension screw just a quarter turn at a time until the arm holds position without sagging when you let go, that creaking should stop and you'll probably feel a lot better about your coffee cup situation.
