Visiting the library in my hometown and seeing the 'quiet study' area full of people just scrolling on their phones

It made me wonder if we're designing our spaces for focus all wrong, and if maybe we should just accept that distraction is the new normal.

What if the quiet isn't for no phones, but for no pressure? @the_gray is onto something with the dead battery thing. My library's quiet room is always full of people on laptops too, not just books. The point isn't to make everyone read old novels. It's a shared spot away from noise where you can just be, whether you're working, scrolling, or staring at the wall. Maybe that's the real focus now, a calm bubble in a loud world.

Our local library just added phone charging stations to the quiet floor. Maybe the point isn't to force focus, but to give people a calm place to recharge, phones and all.

Yeah, that's a solid point from @jackson.wesley. Sometimes you just need a quiet spot where your phone isn't dying on you.
