Rant: My kitchen remodel hit a wall 3 days in and I had to figure it out real quick
Was doing a small cabinet refresh in my apartment here in Denver last weekend. Thought it would be a simple paint job and new handles. Day 3 I go to mount the first door and realize the hinge screws are stripping out the old holes. Like every single one. Junk wood or something. Stood there staring at it for 10 minutes feeling like an idiot. Ended up drilling out the holes and jamming in some wooden dowels with wood glue. Cut them flush and let them dry overnight. Next day the screws held perfect. Door hangs straight now. Has anyone else run into old cabinets that just fall apart when you try to fix them?

Hard disagree here. Dowels are a hack fix for bad prep work. Should've just used bigger screws or those little plastic wall anchors. Way cleaner.

Bigger screws would've torn the drywall out without an anchor. Wall anchors work fine for light stuff but they still pull through if someone leans on the shelf. Dowels grab more material and hold better over time if you drill them in right.
