PSA: Left my stable 9-5 for freelance and hit 6 months of chaos

I had to pick between a comfy office job with a 401k or going full freelance in Portland. I chose the freelance path and my income dropped 40% for the first 3 months. Anyone else make a jump like this and figure out a way to smooth out the slow months?

Anyone else make a jump like this and figure out a way to smooth out the slow months?" Yeah, that 40% drop sounds familiar. My first year freelancing I had two months where I made almost nothing. I started keeping a separate savings account just for the slow months and put a chunk of every good payment in there. Also learned to say no to cheap clients even when I was scared. It took about a year but the income finally evened out.

@kellyj23 that separate savings account trick saved me too, just gotta treat it like a bill.
