My old manager said 'never take a job for the money' and I think he was wrong

Three years ago my manager Dave told me to turn down a raise at another company because 'fulfillment matters more.' I stayed put, got bored out of my mind, and missed out on 15k extra a year. Now I'm wondering if that advice was just to keep me from leaving his sinking ship. Anyone else get career advice that felt noble but turned out to be total garbage?

I mean, I guess I see it more like he was being honest about what he could handle.
