My neighbor's garden taught me a hard lesson about scheduling

I kept falling behind on my morning routine. Tried every app and planner. Then I watched my neighbor water her plants at exactly 6:15 AM every day for 3 weeks straight. She told me she picks one time and never changes it no matter what. Why do we overcomplicate this stuff instead of just picking a slot and sticking to it?

Routine works great for some people but not everyone has that kind of life where you can lock in a set time every single day. My schedule changes week to week, sometimes even day to day, so picking one slot would just set me up for failure. Better to have a flexible system that adapts to your actual life than force yourself into a rigid time that doesn't fit.

Putting the flexible thing first actually changes the whole mindset though. A guy I used to work with had a rotating shift schedule and he built his workout around "triggers" instead of times. Like every time he got home from his shift, that was his cue to move for 20 minutes. Didn't matter if it was 2am or 2pm. His body just learned to associate walking through the door with doing something active. Same with eating. He'd prep meals based on when his next break landed rather than a clock time. The whole "lock in a time" thing falls apart when your life doesn't line up with a 9 to 5 calendar anyway.
