My dad told me to always overestimate project time by 50%, and he was dead right

Last year I told my wife I could remodel our guest bathroom in 2 weeks. Took me 7 weeks because I kept running into hidden pipe issues and drywall problems. Now I add that 50% buffer to everything I do and my stress level dropped big time. Has anyone else gotten advice from an older relative that actually worked in real life?

Spent six months "fixing" a squeaky floorboard and ended up rebuilding half the deck.

Used to roll my eyes at his "add 50%" rule. Now I swear by it.
