Debate: Did my big life reset 2 years ago in Seattle help or hurt my career progression?

I quit my marketing job and moved to Portland last month to freelance, but after comparing my income now to what I earned back then, I'm wondering if stepping off the corporate ladder was smart or just a detour - has anyone else made a similar pivot and found it was actually a setback?
